Wanted One True Drama (July 1st - 5th, 2013)

Hello and welcome to Work Tunes.

Massively chaotic day today after a 1 hour delay with a doctor's appointment for Miss 4. I'm hurriedly throwing this all together with what little time I have left before swimming lessons.

What I've got for next week is the new ones from Mavis Staples and Black Sabbath. Also new is the True Blood Season 4 soundtrack. For a little bit of 70s flavour there's Lou Reed's solo debut and the greatest hits of Earth, Wind & Fire. Art Brut's fun Bang Bang Rock and Roll unbelievably makes its first Worktunes list ever; as does Beck's One Foot In The Grave. On the rap side of town there's Ice Cube and Melbourne's own Pegz. And lastly, the follow up to a compilation I played last week, For The Kids Too is here.

Song of the Week : Best Coast - Storms

This is a cover. The second Fleetwood Mac cover that Best Coast have done (the other being Rhiannon). Not having listened much to Tusk, I wasn't immediately aware this was a cover. Fleetwood mac's original just hadn't caught my ear like this, so I didn't recognise it. If you listen to the original, it's obviously superior, but Stevie doesn't give it any oomph. She sings it in that world-weary, defeated Stevie Nicks way she usually does. Which is also a fitting way to sing it. Especially the bit about the deadly calm inside the storm. But when Bethany sings it, she pours it out like a wail of pain.

It probably felt like a Best Coast song to me for that reason. The instrumentation is redundant; simple and sparse and noisily punky. It's just a vehicle for Bethany's voice to run around on top of. It also feels like hers because of the obvious feeling for it and also the subject matter - given her self-proclaimed reputation for being a 'storm' and her tumultous long distance relationship with Nathan of Wavves ("I did not deal with the road").

The song has been stuck in my head for weeks. I've been relating to the "I have always been a storm" refrain. I've never been a 'blue calm sea',   - But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard to be the Shepherd.- :)

Postscript: The first time I heard this song, when I heard the closing refrain “We were frail”, what I heard was “We were Fredo” – you know, like Fredo Corleone of the Godfather. I thought “Huh? Oh, she must mean they betrayed each other. Or maybe that their relationship was something they loved but that had to die because it caused problems” the way Michael kills Fredo. I of course looked up the lyrics and discovered what they were. But you know what, We were Fredo actually works!

Ciao

Got to jet off to swimming really soon, so I'll have to love you all and leave you. Stay golden, be excellent to each other and if I don't see you good afternoon, good evening and goodnight.

Twisted Suburban Detroit Skin (August 27th - 31st)

Hello and welcome to Work Tunes.

A stock standard busy-as-you-like week at work this week. I got some projects finished, had some finished product delivered and started a couple of new ones. Plus, I'm beginning a restructure of the whole company website, so that is going to be a ton of writing and 'html-ing'. Really looking forward to seeing the fruits of that project up and running. In the meantime, I'll be working away with a bunch of albums on the go.

To start with, there's two soundtracks - one from the Sex Pistiols film and the other from a great rock/road film about Kiss fans. Speaking of rock, I've grabbed a little Sabbath compilation for some good old-fashioned vitamin RAWK. To calm things down, and for the first time in a while, I have Nizlopi and Bob Evans; I've added Celebrity Skin because I watched Hit So Hard last week. There's the self-titled Pretty & Twisted LP from Concrete Blonde's leading lady Johnette Napolitano; I've got some LA rap from Ice-T and some from Melbourne rhymes via Pegz. Topping it all off is some more downtempo beats from SineRider after I enjoyed LEURE last week.

Song of the Week : The Vaccines - Teenage Icon

I'm going with Teenage Icon by The Vaccines because of it's uber catchy chorus. I could have taken any track off of The Bamboos because I have really enjoyed it, but since J gave us one last week, I pick this.

I don't know much about The Vaccines. They only seem a couple of years old and this is their second lp I think. Besides the catchy chorus, this track has that pop punk sound that was popular late 90s, early 2000s with bands like Living End.

See what you think.

Hooroo

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you found something you might want to listen to. If you check out The Vaccines song from last week, don't say you weren't warned about the catchy chorus. I'm still singing it.

I was going to go to the boat harbour in Hillarys this weekend for some lunch in the sun, but I found out City To Surf is on and there's a heap of road closures. So instead I'll probably stay local and head down to the wharf in Fremantle like I should have in the first place (6.5kms vs 39kms). Still, a change is as good as a holiday and all that. We'll see.

Go Eagles. Hasala malakim.

Sabbath of the Lost Cowboy Horses (Feb 27 - Mar 2)

Hello and welcome to Work Tunes.

This last week or so, I've been re-watching the excellent BBC documentary series Seven Ages of Rock. It's been influencing my choices quite a bit. I could have filled a whole list just with music from the various bands the series looks at. That much classic rock might blow the circuits in my laptop and my headphones, so I'll space it out instead.

What I've picked this week from the BBCs inspiration is Black Sabbath's Volume 4, Pink Floyd's Meddle and Ramones Rocket to Russia. For a bit of balance, I've got The Palace Brothers, Wilco, Cowboy Junkies and Jamiroquai. For those Hip Hop taste buds, I chose Black Sheep and Mojo's Roots of Hip Hop compilation. Finally, there's a selection of the Billboard 100 from 1982 for a twist of cheese.

Song of the Week : Led Zeppelin - Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You

My SOTW this week is inspired by my drive in this morning and also by the BBC series Seven Ages of Rock that I’ve been re-watching. The most recent episode I had on was We Will Rock You* (*Edit - It's actually We Are The Champions. Different Queen song. I knew I should have checked that.) about stadium acts such as Queen, Dire Straits, KISS and the band who started it all, Led Zeppelin. The doco claimed Led Zep were the first band to tell the promoter, “we’ll take 90% and you can have 10%” which was the reverse of how things used to be. They got away with it because they filled massive spaces and 10% of Led Zep was still huge money.

I woke up singing the riff from Whole Lotta Love and then, driving in to work, Babe I’m Gonna Leave You comes on random on my iPod. This song is epically constructed, massively overblown and bombastic, hard hitting and wildly screamed and yet more than 40 years later, it’s still brilliant. It still makes you feel the kick drums in your chest and Plant's wail in your brain. It could be released by a band tomorrow and the critics would hail it as the redemption of rock music. Except, they don’t make many like these any more.

I’d slip you the lossless version, but it’s a huge file. Besides, I’m betting you all have it on a CD somewhere. It’s made me think of buying the 4 LP vinyl Mothership boxset. The actual albums are hard to find on vinyl in good condition for under $100 each. But the box has most of the best tracks for about $100 the lot.

Crank it up loud and enjoy.

Aloha
Big weekend for me, with Ryan Adams at the Concert Hall. I saw Grizzly play in 2006 at Metro Fremantle with the Cardinals. This concert though is acoustic and solo. Should be really different to the Cardinals gig which totally rawked \m/

See you next week. Don't forget to take time out to listen to some tunes in your busy schedules.
