Donnas Exposed Monster Beats (September 2nd - 6th)

Hello and welcome to Work Tunes.

After a terrible rookie mistake, I am spending my late Saturday afternoon recovering deleted TV shows from an external disc. There's a reason we invented confirmation prompts and unfortunately I didn't take the time to really consider my response. Do you really want to permanently delete your TV shows Corey? Do you really? So now, one folder at a time, I'm running a recovery program on it. HandyRecovery - I can't recommend it enough, obviously. But never mind all that now, to the music.

 It has been so long since I heard Monster that I'd forgotten the track list. I recently bought an Alt Country double compilation, so disc one is here; and I dragged Gillian Welch along for the ride to compliment it. I can't ever get enough Tribe and I think it was Harry Allen who recommended Talib Kweli & Hi Tek's LP. Just the one new album this week, but what a new one, from the gorgeous Neko Case. More ol friends on the bill come from Dinosaur Jr, The Donnas and Paul Kelly. Finally, because I couldn't stop humming Feel Like Makin' Love complete with air guitar riffing (I think that's a complex part of my current 70s muscle car fascination), I have the best of Bad Company.

 Song of the Week : Pond  - Hobo Rocket


I've never paid much attention to Tame Impala, so when I found Pond on NPR, I wasn't aware of the connection or that Pond had already had albums out. All I knew was there was a Perth band getting noticed in the US even if it was by public radio. 

The album Hobo Rocket is an enjoyable listen and I picked the title track because it's a bit of fun. The vocals are done by some guy named Cowboy John who is meant to be a Perth fixture (I'm sure one of you will be able to fill in the uninitiated?!) 

His singing sounds like Eddy Vedder pretending to be a bum. The song is a psychedelic freak out of a jam session with a sort of homeless grunge rap.

 A Happy Father's Day for us breeders in Australia for tomorrow. I hope there's some quality family time and some vinyl involved - well for me at least.

Welcome Reincarnated Honky Rapper (May 13 - 17)

Hello and welcome to Work Tunes.

 Welcome back after another Work Tunes break for a week off. I've been looking after Mrs coreyj while she recovers from surgery on her hand to remove a ganglion and a benign tumor. But as of Monday, it's back to work I go, so I better get some music together.

 There is a stack of new stuff this week, though it's a mixed bag. Firstly, the new Ben Lee sounds like an ambient/new age background soundtrack for a mud bath place. Iggy & the Stooges sound like they're 18 again and it's a great pay off. The third volume from She & Him, thanks to Zooey Deschanel's honey smooth vocals, sounds spectacular. 

 Also new, Snoop 'Lion' has reinvented himself as a Rastafarian reggae rapper. A kid making a big splash is Chance the Rapper and his Acid Rap mixtape. The second half of the Paste April sampler is here, as is the second half of the Led Zep Mothership box. In the not so new category, there's Elton John's classic Honky Chateau (superb even just for Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters and Rocket Man), Neko Case's breakout Fox Confessor Brings the Flood and lastly, the first Wavves album.

 Song of the Week : Otis Redding - Send Me Some Lovin'
One thing I got to do on my week off which I don't do a lot of under normal circumstances is cook. I made a few pretty simple dishes, but I started to enjoy all the food prep and such that I only really do on special occasions these days because I'm just home too late for it. Much like at work, I chose a different album each night to play while I chopped, cooked and cleaned. The one that really seemed like it belonged in the kitchen was an Otis Redding compilation. Funny enough, on surgery day while I waited at home, I watched a German film called Soul Kitchen about a restaurant that played Soul.
I'm not sure what it is about true Soul music that seems to go hand in hand with good company, good food and good times; especially given the content of such music is usually forlorn and pleading, but it just does. Try it yourself. 

 I picked Send Me Some Lovin' because it was the track that most stuck in my mind when I sat down to write my SOTW knowing I'd chosen the album. This song, this music sings right through me and if I believed in the existence of souls, I'd say that's where it resonates and that's why they call it that. But I don't, as such, so all I can say is how great is this?!


Keep on Truckin'

Yep, Keep on Truckin'. Ah the Seventies. What a blast it must have been if you weren't 0 - 7 years old at the time. 

 If you're reading this, play that Otis Redding song up there. Whatever you're feeling, whether good or bad, you will feel spectacular when you hear Otis sing. Plus, if you don't already know, Soul music is the only kind you really need in a crisis of any kind.

Open My Big Cyclone Beach Home (August 6th - 10th)

Hello and welcome to Work Tunes.


Guttentag meine kameraden! What's the haps yo? A comfortingly standard week for me this week just gone with a viewing of The Dark Knight Rises thrown in to shake things up. I enjoyed it, but honestly, Mr Nolan sir, EDIT just a little bit eh?

Alright then, let's get right into the tunes. What have I got this week you ask? Well, there's a compilation of songs for the road I picked up from the eBays which looks like it might have been sold at a petrol station; I thought I'd throw in som Jay-Z which made me think of Ice T and the 99 Problems line that Jay-Z stole; I've got some Kiss because, well it's Kiss; sticking with the 70s I've got the first disc of Elton John's remastered greatest hits; I also have volume 1 of Trainspotting because I'm still reading Skagboys (and I will have volume 2 next week); Neko Case is always great; there's Beach House's first album, some Babes In Toyland and finally Big Star thanks to my rediscovery of Thirteen this week.

Song of the Week : Big Star - Thirteen



This week's track comes courtesy of James. In a roundabout way. When he requested the Evan Dando cover of Sam Stone, it made me add Dando's Live At The Brattle Theatre to my playlist.


One of the songs on the album is Thirteen. When I was listening to it this week, I knew I'd heard it before and it must be a cover. At first, I worked out I had heard Wilco do it, but I knew it wasn't a Wilco song. So I looked on the iPod and sure enough Wilco - Thirteen appears on Big Star Small World a tribute LP to Big Star.


I have a copy of Big Star's 3rd, but had never heard #1. So this is Thirteen from that album. I like it for its subtlety. It's a teen rebellion song with a protagonist who sounds like he'd rather sleep than run riot. I like that if you take away the "school" references, there isn't any line that couldn't relate to most people with a generational conflict. So it is the title and the inclusion of school that gives it a great deal of its meaning. Subtle and understated. Not enough of that these days.

Thanks for stopping by. Last minute preparation and supplementary gift buying this weekend as Miss 5 becomes Miss 6 on Thursday. She's been given permission to choose the meal for her birthday dinner and she's gone with pizza. I can't argue with that. She didn't say beer, but I'm sure she was thinking it, so I'll just have one to honour her wishes. 


Derby day today. It would be typical of my Eagles to lose this one if everything else goes right for them, like Hawthorn losing already has, so I won't get my hopes up. May the best team (not wearing purple) win.

Playlist August 8th - 12th, 2011

Hello and welcome to Work Tunes.

In this week's list, I have a repeat performance from two bands I really enjoyed last week - The Donnas and Elbow. I threw in some classic Prince because a borrowed Weather Report LP had me feeling funky. I also threw in that Weather Report LP. The most recent episode of True Blood featured a great track from Neko Case, so it made me add that album too. The No Boundaries compilation was picked up in an Op Shop for $1, pretty sweet huh? And there's other stuff too. Check it out.

Song of the Week : Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know
This week’s song I almost had to post the YouTube to, because I didn’t have it, but then I realised I’d emailed it to someone and booya! Sent folder baby. That being said, the clip is really cool, so you might want to watch it anyway : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY

This is the newest song from Gotye. I don’t know much about him, I only have Like Drawing Blood and wouldn’t call myself a proper fan. But this track in duet with Kimbra is amazing. Not just for the terrific film clip but for the good old-fashioned melody and rock-ballad-esque intensity. Something about it puts me in mind of 70s Sherbert or Peter Gabriel. Listen when he sings “you didn’t have to stoop so low” or “I guess that I don't need that though”, its very Gabriel. Looking forward to hearing the album. The YouTube clip says its Making Mirrors and out on August 19.
